In Australia embryo gender selection is undertaken for health reasons only and couples must undergo the whole process of In Vitro Fertilisation, creating fertilised embryos that are then selected tested and then implanted. There is no law against selecting an IVF embryo for its sex but it is against the ethical guidelines for Australian IVF clinics to do so for what is referred to for 'social reasons'.
