Alan Cummings of the Durham Miners' Association says that the annual gala remains politically relevant. 'These villages have suffered greatly and successive governments, both Labour and Conservative have done nothing to help them.' Counteracting fears that attendance would gradually fall in the years following that last pit closures, attendance to the annual Durham Miners' Gala has actually been growing; around 120,00 participated last year and more are expected this. 'I don't think there's anything like it for in the country similar to the atmosphere of the Durham Miner Gala', said Peter Lawson, secretary of the Easington Colliery Band.
