Statistics tend to dominate the public debate around poverty. But that leaves the people affected feeling like they ‘count for nothing’. The stigma of ‘being poor’ hides a deeper problem: The lack of representational agency. A debate about poverty must first look at the experience of being poor, and acknowledge that poverty as a material nature as well as relational impacts.
