Tele-medicine is one solution for better health in remote and rural Australia where there are fewer doctors or specialists. In remote indigenous communities images from an eye screening test, sent via the Internet, are allowing city-based specialists to diagnose eye diseases which , left untreated , could lead to blindness. The screening program uses satellite broadband and could be used as a template for the extension of tele-medicine in the bush. NbnCo is launching its first satellite later this year to deliver the broadband speeds necessary to transmit the images, video and text.
