Right now, the first Australian prosecution of an alleged case of female genital mutilation is under way in the New South Wales Supreme Court. The case concerns two young sisters, who are amongst the 83,000 women and girls in Australia estimated to have had their genitals cut as part of cultural or other practices, according to the advocacy group No FGM Australia.
