In 1971 Bangladesh went to war with West Pakistan to win independence - and to establish a secular country. The war resulted in one of the worst genocides of the 20th century engineered by the Pakistani military in collusion with Islamist forces. Trying to bring the perpetrators to justice has proved fatal for a number of progressives - and last month's murders in the nation's capital were the latest in a trail of violence.
