Bob Hawke was Prime Minister of Australia from 1983 until 1991, making him Labor's longest-serving Prime Minister. He was President of the ACTU from 1970-1980. In 2009 he helped establish the Centre for Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding at the University of South Australia. He was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1979. He has been referred to as "the heart and soul of the Labor Party" by former PM Kevin Rudd.
