Tom Uren was Deputy Leader of the Australian Labor Party. He became a minister in the Whitlam and Hawke governments. He helped to establish the heritage conservation movement in Australia, protecting large areas of suburban Sydney from developers. Even after leaving political life in Canberra he campaigned for environmental protection of Sydney Harbor foreshores and wilderness areas. He was also a leading figure in the anti-war movement in Australia. He died at the age of 93 on January 26th 2015.
