South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011 as the result of a 2005 peace deal that ended Africa's longest-running civil war. The new government, led by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, promised to be inclusive and democratic yet by December last year the political rivalry between the South Sudanese president and vice president had erupted into violence.
