The organisation Ocean Clean-up has just carried out a month long survey of the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’, a vast stretch of sea where millions of items of discarded plastic have been drawn together by ocean currents. Important work, because as CSIRO scientist Chris Wilcox predicts, plastic ingestion will affect 99 per cent of all seabirds by the year 2050.
