Raymond Depardon is one of the great French photographers and photojournalists. He was born in 1942 near Villefranche-sur-Saône, France. After moving to Paris at the age of 19, Depardon started as a photographer assistant. He got his start at the Dalmas photo agency shooting local news events and sports but quickly started photographing more foreign assignments, particularly the war in Algeria. In 1966 he co-founded his own photography agency, Gamma. His stint with Gamma included winning a pulitzer prize for his work in Chad. He eventually became a full time Magnum member. He has an impressive body of work as a photographer, photojournalist and film maker.
